Elise van den Nieuwelaar
Animal caretaker assistant
Hi, I’m Elise from the Netherlands, and I’ve had a lifelong passion for animals. My journey with the Wolf Science Center began in 2023 when I stumbled upon a documentary showcasing their work. Intrigued by their mission and in search of an internship for my Master’s in Behavioural Ecology, I decided to reach out. To my delight, I was invited to assist with a cooperation experiment involving dogs, wolves, and people, conducted by a PhD student from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna.
As part of my internship, I also had the opportunity to work as an animal caretaker intern once a week—a role that quickly became one of the highlights of my experience. Seeing the dedication and welfare-centered care provided by the trainers, along with the trusting relationships they build with the animals, immediately drew me in.
When my internship ended, I knew I had to return. I was thrilled when offered a temporary position as an animal caretaker assistant, helping with the raising of wolf puppies—a dream come true! Now, as a recent graduate, I’m excited to be part of the amazing team, building relationships with the animals, contributing to the upbringing of the wolf puppies, assisting with scientific research, and learning new things daily about canines and myself. Every day is unique and special, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be living my passion and contributing to such a meaningful community and cause.
